JKLF leader Afzal Jatalvi died

2 December 1999

Former President of JKLF Afzal Jatalvi died today at 1600 hour today in Oldham Lancashire. He had a leukaemia. His funeral will take place tomorrow (Friday) at 1630, in the Islamic Centre Waterloo Street Oldham. His wife and the only
daughter live in Oldham.

Afzal Jatalvi was President of JKLF between 1985 and 1992. For a period of time, he also served as an Acting Chairman of the organisation. He was very staunch supporter and advocate of an independent Kashmir, and led the organisation
through very difficult time, especially after the kidnapping and Killing of an Indian diplomat, Mahatre, in Birmingham, and imprisonment of Mr Anmanullah Khan, the then Chairman of the JKLF.

The death of Afzal Jatalvi is a serious loss to the JKLF and the independent movement. I served with him as a General Secretary between 1985 and 1992, and found him very dedicated and hard working person. He made a very valuable
contribution to strengthen the JKLF and the independent movement.

When Mr Amanullah Khan dissolved the JKLF in 1992, he sided with him, and I opposed this decision, and from then onwards, though still working for the independence movement, we reluctantly began our political life on different
paths. Despite this we respected each other and kept in touch with each other. We met for the last time about six months ago. His death is a personal loss to me. I have lost a friend, a colleague and a dedicated soldier of an independent movement. May Allah be kind to him and reward him with heaven. Ameen.
