(2000) 7I’s hijacker condemns plane hijacking — The Daily Excelsior

NEW DELHI, Dec 30: Hashim Qureshi, who hijacked the first Indian Airlines plane ‘Ganga’ in 1971, today condemned the forceful takeover of IC-814 to Kandahar and killing of one passenger, saying the ‘barbaric’ act was carried out by
mercenaries.

Undoubtedly, the drama of hijacking was staged through mercenaries ….. (and) there is no place for such demands while fighting for a noble cause, Qureshi, the founder of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), said in a statement from Amsterdam.

If Bin Laden is made a hero in the society, we will only create many Bin Ladens. If the struggles of Yasser Arafat, Nelson
Mandela and myself are appreciated, then peace, brotherhood and tolerance to settle the issues through mutual negotiations would prevail in the society, Qureshi, now chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Liberation Party, said.

Though I had a part to play in hijacking in the past, I strongly condemn all acts of violence as in the past, he said while offering condolences on the death of Rupin Katyal to the bereaved family. (PTI)
