Millennium begins with bad omen for J&K
By Sunny Dua
JAMMU, Jan 1 : The release of Maulana Masood Azhar and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar
alias Latram while speaks of the volume of militants’ zeal to survive in
Jammu and
Kashmir and continue with their activities marking a steep rise in the
militancy related
activities, the new millennium began with a bad omen for Jammu and Kashmir.

January 1, 2000 – Saturday, when every one prefered to perform well at his
respective
work place, all government departments including the civil secretariat wore
a deserted
look with employees staying off from their duties and affecting the normal
functioning
which had come to a grinding halt.

It would not be wrong to say that the state entered into the darkest
millennium. The
existing power scenario with 17 hours of power cut in a day has virtually
made the
people of the Jammu and Kashmir enter the ‘Millennium of Darkness’ with no
sign of
relief in the coming months.

In the government offices it looked as if the employees were following
precedent set by
them only. It was the same day a year ago when the state employees were on
strike. On
January 1, 1999 these very employees had gone on an indefinite strike and
paralysed
the normal functioning in all government departments.

The Bankrupt state entered the new millennium adding miseries to the lives
of people.
The other major matter of concern for the people of the state was imbalanced
ecological conditions due to which the state did not experience snowfall
this year. With
the winter having delayed people especially the tourists could not enjoy the
picturesque
spots of Gulmarg and Patnitop.

Imposition of curfew at Surankot in Poonch following an attack by militants
on Brigade
Headquarters in which an army jawan and two militants were killed, empty
coffers,
employees’ strike, failure of talks between the government and the
employees, Chief
minister flying to union capital for money followed by inability of state
cabinet to resolve
the employees’ strike marred the first day of the first month of the new
millennium.

Yesterday evening, however, escaped from the shadow of evils as the entire
state
celebrated new millennium with great pomp and show. Since, people had come
out of
the shock of hijacking drama, the evening was quite glamorous with youth
having the
ramps on fire.

The evening also witnessed a sad event with ten people lost their lives in
Udhampur bus
mishap. Those dreaming to enter the new millennium with their dear ones had
left the
later shattered and shaken. The news of bus accident had sent shock waves
among the
relatives of deceased.

Twenty people were injured near Haven in Kashmir when the bus they were
travelling in
turned turtle. Three passengers were injured seriously in this accident on
the first day of
the new year.

On the first day of the year 2000, the Valley otherwise remained peaceful
and militants
struck the otherwise peaceful areas of border districts of Poonch and
Rajouri. They
attacked Brigade Headquarters killing an army jawan. However, they too lost
two of
their men.

The Valley which untill now had been catering information of killings alone
to the rest of
the world also added to the new millennium two babies who were born in Lal
Ded
hospital. Two baby girls were born in Lal Ded hospital entering their names
into the list
of millennium babies.
