Excelsior Correspondent

Katra, Jan 2 : The Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji
received a record number of 46.7 lacs pilgrims during the past
year registering an increase of nearly 0.5 lac pilgrims as
compared to 1998. The rush of yatries remained unabated
during the year despite of Kargil conflict.

During the last week commencing from December 25, 1.47 lacs
pilgrims visited the Shrine. About 25 thousand pilgrims had
darshans on December, 31 1999 alone on the eve of New Year
and New Millennium.

The increase in yatra is attributable to vast improvement in
infrastructure and amenities for yatries made by the Shrine
Board. Ever since the take over of management of the Shrine by
the Board, donations and offerings have been invested in the
creation and improvement of facilities for the pilgrims.

A large number of developmental projects were completed
during the year. Major works undertaken/completed during the
year are establishment of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and
identification of land thereof, commissioning of Alternate track
between Adkuwari and Bhawan at a cost of Rs 6.5 crores,
launching of Web Site on Internet, operationalization of 200
bedded dormitory accommodation (Manokamana Bhawan) at
Darbar Vaishno Devi Ji and 54 bedded additional block in
Niharika complex at Katra, addition of about 40 rooms/halls as
free accommodation for yatries at Bhawan, operationalization of
